Let’s Campaign for Kindness this Fall
We see division and polarization in our country, communities, and even inside the walls of churches. It’s easy to wonder if we will ever go beyond agreeing to disagree, yet Jesus shows us a better way. Jesus taught us that we should treat others as we want to be treated. This is commonly known as The Golden Rule and holds the power to bring people together again. This fall, Hope United Methodist Church is joining hundreds of churches in the Do Unto Others movement. This movement was started by the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City with the hope of spreading kindness, compassion, and respect around the country.
We will implement the Do Unto Others movement in a variety of ways. You’re invited to join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am for a five-week worship series on how to practice the Golden Rule. This Do Unto Others series will begin on Sunday, October 13th, and conclude on Sunday, November 10th. There are a variety of resources we’ll have in our church narthex for you to take home with you. We have buttons, stickers, yard signs, and printed hand-outs for doing acts of kindness over the next 30 days.
Hope UMC will be practicing acts of kindness on Election Day (Tuesday, November 5th) and you’re invited to join us in these community activities. We will be collecting winter coats for the students of Bench Elementary School from now until November 5th. Please bring any new or gently used children’s coats to Hope UMC and place them in the designated donation bin. We will bring the winter coats to Bench Elementary when we go to serve at their school’s Friendsgiving Dinner on Tuesday, November 5th from 5:00-7:00 pm. This “Thanksgiving-style” dinner will bless the Bench children and their families and you’re invited to sign up and serve at the dinner. Finally, we will be taking snacks, drinks, and cards to the volunteers working the voting polls at Metra Park on Tuesday, November 5th. We're encouraging everyone to write these volunteers cards of appreciation so we can bless them on Election Day!
This election season, Hope UMC is dedicated to shining the light of Jesus and coming together in unity and support of our neighbors. May we all campaign for kindness this fall, remembering that we are all beloved children of God!
